As an artist, I constantly struggle with keeping my style consistent. In reality, my style is very experimental, but something that stays constant throughout any of my work is my use of color. I enjoy vibrantly decorating my canvas with bright and bold colors. I oftentimes pull my inspiration from my cultural background and my own body. I am inspired by the beautiful textures and colors used on the traditional textiles from Guatemala. I use my face as my subject because I carry it with me everywhere I go. I pull from both of these things because they have always been very constant in my life.
I use art as a tool to discover my identity and focus on the aspects of myself that I feel are unique. My medium is almost always oil paint because it is the medium in which I feel truly gives me time to work at my own pace. My ideas are constantly changing throughout each project and oil paint allows me to slowly manipulate and change any aspect of my painting. I also love seeing the relationship between the thickness and richness of oil paint paired with the vibrancy of synthetic pigments to achieve a bold color palette. My work is ever-changing because I am constantly changing. One thing that won’t change, however, is my love for paint and the opportunity for expression it allows me.
