When I was growing up, I hated school. I hated school because none of the teachers I had seemed to show compassion toward their students. It was not until college where I experienced an educator who encouraged me to pursue my goals even when I thought they were unreachable. As an educator, I hope to encourage students to do the unthinkable and push them to become better creative thinkers. As an art teacher, I hope to teach students about the importance of having an art education and how it can help them in their everyday life.
Art education teaches students so much about dealing with emotions, taking risks, and comprehension of complex ideas. Art is also crucial for students as it teaches them about various cultures and allows them to better understand the world. My worldview changed significantly once I began taking more art courses. I began to see that art weaves people together and allows them to connect despite different backgrounds or beliefs. I feel as though my purpose in life is to allow others to explore art as a way to communicate with others and build social connections. I want to encourage students to think creatively, even outside of the classroom.
One of my main goals as an educator is to diversify the curriculum by using it as a tool to reflect underrepresented students. Much of art education has a very westernized and white view which reflects a very small percentage of the art out in the world and an even smaller percentage of the students in the classroom. Teaching students about current artists of color or artists with disabilities can allow them to see how diverse art can be.
As an educator, I hope to learn from my students as much as they learn from me. I want to grow alongside my students. I plan to grow as an educator by keeping up with current events and figuring ways to incorporate that into the curriculum. I will constantly educate myself on ways to keep students curious and creative. I want to give students a voice and listen to what they have to say. I want to be the educator that I wish I had as a student.
